XFree86推出新的4.0版，此次的版本更新在XFree86的发展史上别具意义，除了加入一些新的显示卡芯片支持外，发展小组大量的改写了XFree86 X Server，加入了很多有趣的新功能，所以很多方面还不是很完备，提供给敢试敢尝鲜的使用者使用。
目前比较缺乏的是没有一个好用的设置工具，设定起来会比较麻烦，所以不建议新手安装4.0版，另外要注意的是某些在3.3.x版支援的硬体在4.0是不支援的，4.0目前的硬体支援状况可以参阅Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.0 。
