This week, Berlin is hosting the European JBoss World Conference. Red Hat is now the organizer of the three-day conference for developers and users of the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite (JEMS). In April, the Linux distributor took over the middleware specialist and recently began offering its products, which are still published under the independent JBoss brand, as part of its own the Red Hat Application Stack in combination with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
This takeover and the resulting expansion of Red Hat's portfolio to include a complete SOA Suite has shifted Red Hat's focus from a Linux distributor and service provider towards more of a platform provider. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, the company has already completely integrated JBoss' sales and support departments in its own infrastructure.
JBoss already seems to have benefited from Red Hat's position on the EMEA market (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), where sales revenue and the number of new partnerships have grown considerably over the past year. Red Hat is generally very strong in the finance sector, public administration, high-tech industry, and telecommunications.
JBoss has presented the core components of the upcoming version 5.0 of its JBoss Application Server (AS) -- the heart of the JEMS Suite and Java EE 5 compatible -- to developers and users. In addition to the SOAP stack, these components include the Seam web application framework, JBoss Clustering, JBoss Messaging, JBoss EJB3 -- JBoss' implementation of EJB 3.0 -- and the Hibernate persistence framework.
All of the components listed work with the current JBoss Application Server 4.05 and can be downloaded, as can the first beta version of Application Server 5.0. The final version of AS 5.0 is expected to be released in the first half of 2007.
JBoss' acquired EBS implementation -- JBoss Enterprise Service Bus 4.0 based on Rosetta ESB and designed as an addition to the company's middleware product range -- has also been drawing a lot of attention.
The execs at JBoss and Red Hat agree that Unbreakable Linux, a version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux announced at the end of October by database giant Oracle, is basically just a lot of hot air. On the other hand, they are suspicious about the pact that their competitor Novell recently entered into with Microsoft. As JBoss founder Mark Fleury put it, "what they are trying to do is fork the legal support by saying they will not sue." (Craig Morris) / (jk/c't)
